Transgenic Animals

ABOUT TRANSGENIC ANIMALS:

Transgenic animals are being created due to the advances in biotechnology. These animals require for the insertion of foreign DNA into their cells which are then reproduced by the animal cells. By altering the animals genome it allows for all the daughter cells of that one animal cell to carry the new genome. These animals are being created as they would help out in a variety of fields, as they can help provide new information on ways to prevent diseases and illnesses as well as for ways to be more economic(Margawati, Endang). Transgenic animals allow for us to study gene expression and the various aspects of genes and their elements (“Canadian Council on Animal Care in science”, 1).

DEFINITION:

A transgenic animal is an animal that carries a foreign gene that has been deliberately inserted into its genome using recombinant DNA methodology (“Transgenic animal”).This basically means that an animal has the gene of another organism inserted into its genome so that when the cells reproduce they carry the traits found on the foreign gene.

HISTORY:

The very first transgenic animal was recorded to have been created in 1982 by Richard Palmiter and Ralph Brinster who developed the technique needed. They took a gene from one animal and then transferred it into the embryo of a mouse. They completed this through microinjection which is known as the first successful method of creating the world’s very first transgenic animal (The Transgenic Mouse).
