Canadian Regulation:
Transgenic animals are also used for meat in certain countries it is stated that transgenic meat does not have to be tested by humans to determine their level of safety. Another concern for citizens is that transgenic meat does not have to be specifically outlined on the food product label; this would mean that you could be consuming transgenic meat without even knowing it. In Canada, however, transgenic food regulation has been approved as long as it follows the basis of the Codex Alimentarius (Enviropig). The Codex Alimentarius is an outline that highlights specific standards, guidelines and other information with regards to food production and food safety (CODEX Alimentarius: Home). In addition to following the Codex Alimentarius, it is necessary that approval is asked from the other governmental areas when transgenic animals want to be used environmentally and medically. Obviously, it also must be FDA approved (Enviropig).
The CCAC (Canadian Council on Animal Care) also has its own set of guidelines which must be followed to ensure that the animal is not being harmed. Specific practices and regulations must be followed by the companies who are trying to create the transgenic animals (CCAC guidelines on: transgenic animals (1997)).
